November Newsletter

After a brief hiatus, the Withrow Home & School newsletter is back! As you can see we have a new format this year. We’re very happy with it and we hope you’ll like it too! This website will be your one-stop shop for all your Home & School news, updates, links and resources. Newsletters will reside on the homepage and we have some permanent pages as well.  Grab a coffee, sit back, browse around and let us know what you think. This is a work in progress, so do not be surprised if things get changed around here and there. If you have announcements or materials you’d like us to post, please email us at

After School Programs

It’s time to sign up for the winter term’s After School Programs! Term 2 (Jan – Mar 2015) and Term 3 (Mar – Jun 2015) program schedules are up. Sign up for one or both now. A couple of new and exciting programs have been added to the roster.
PLEASE NOTE: a big change this time – registration will close on Tuesday, December 16th. This is so programs with insufficient enrollment can be cancelled in time to prevent penalty charges from the TDSB permit office. Parents will be informed of such cancellations on December 17th, which should give everyone enough time to make alternate arrangements. (Programs that still have spots available by then may continue to be open for registration until the program start date. But this is at the discretion of the each program provider, so please contact them directly.)

As always, you sign up directly with the program providers using the links available through the program calendar. Have a look at the great programs on offer:

Annual Giving Campaign
Our Annual Giving Campaign is launching this week. This campaign marks the beginning of our fundraising efforts for the year and is an opportunity for busy families to make a straight-up financial donation to the Home & School. We’re not asking you to buy or help sell anything to raise money during this campaign. There are no middlemen and no overheads and every dollar donated goes directly to support our curriculum enhancements like arts, science and technology. In addition, this year’s campaign will also raise funds for the revitalization of our schoolyard – in particular the next phase of development, which is the new play structure in the ash grove. Keep an eye out in your child’s backpack for the letter, or get a head start and donate online now! You can also have a closer look at the development plans here.

Coat Drive
Thank you to parent, Andrea Savage, and teacher, Mme Beaugrand, for organizing the October coat drive. A huge number of coats were donated to the Red Door Shelter. Here is Andrea’s 7-seater car full to the brim of coats and some of her tireless Grade 6 volunteers. These volunteers did everything from making posters, doing school announcements, performing skits for the primary grades and collecting all the coats. Thank you to Julija Apse, Theodore Ceccarelli, Kate Cha, Parker Chase, Zoe Davidson, Robin Henshaw, Yasmin Linklater, Sydney Mass, Thalia Michalarias, Ola Njoku, Zoriana Phillips, Elliot Sloss, Kate Smith, Anson Tom, Hanna Vandermaas, Erika Vandertuin and Kaetlyn Walker. Many children and grownups will be warmer this winter because of you.

Birthday Donations

gift-with-balloonsParent, Janet Sio, and her son, Joel Lim, realized that this is a big year for Withrow. So for Joel’s birthday, they asked their guests to donate money to Withrow H&S in lieu of presents. Thank you, Joel and Janet! If this idea appeals to you, please checkout our Ways to Support page for an easy online donation link you can share with birthday party guests.

Erica Stark

As you all know we lost a friend a few weeks ago. Erica Stark was a tireless volunteer and advocate for our school and our kids and we miss her more than words can say. We know that the family has been very touched by all the love and support the community has shown them in the past few weeks. We will think of her always and make sure her cheer and dedication and support is never forgotten. Rest in peace, Erica.
